Plan For Hereford Inlet Lighthouse Grounds
The city of North Wildwood has received approval for a multistage improvement project to the Hereford Inlet Lighthouse grounds. Besides being home to a number of native species of plants making the grounds an educational asset, the grounds also serve as a protective buffer from storms, a habitat for wildlife, and a popular recreation spot for those who enjoy nature. However, they are in need of some professional care to preserve them for future generations.
Research & Development
After consultations with Lomax Environmental Consulting, the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection (NJDEP): Office of Leases and Concessions, Historic Preservation Office, and the Division of Land Uses Regulation. A plan was developed to restore the grounds in several stages.
Plants were identified and tagged, those which are not native to the area and/or are invasive will be removed.
Removal & Restoration
Invasive plants will be replaced with those which are native to the area. Some of the plants and trees which are to be removed are: Japanese black pine (Pinus thunbergii), mimosa (Albizia julibrissin), and bamboo species. According to plans, the Japanese Black Pines are to be replaced with Eastern Red Cedar and Chinese Juniper.
Plans also indicate restoration work to walking paths as well as some new plants and flower gardens in other areas of the property.
Review Plans
The drawings for the Hereford Inlet Lighthouse improvement project are available for anyone to download and review on the North Wildwood website.
